Our Story

David has worked in and around Monmouthshire as a dog training instructor for over 10 years, with an excellent reputation for providing high-quality, kind, and reward-based training methods. This is supported by an in-depth knowledge of learning theory for both dogs and humans, together with a very broad experience of contact teaching and resolving behaviour problems.

David and Sam are a husband and wife team who have a passion for working and training gundogs and a wealth of experience in all aspects of lowland shooting from large estates through to small farm shoots and rough shooting. Collectively, they have over twenty-five years of practical involvement in beating, picking up, shooting, shoot management and working tests.

David first represented the Wales International Gundog Team in 2017 and in 2018 represented Wales at the Skinners World Cup. Something they are both hugely proud of. David has successfully instructed clients for shooting and competitive gundog work, judged working tests and judged his first novice field trial by invitation in Sept 2018.

David is the current Retriever Working Test Secretary of The Usk Valley Working Gundog Club, and can offer personal on-shoot coaching for new gundog handlers. They live with and work four Labrador Retrievers, two Working Cocker Spaniels and a Springer Spaniel. From time to time, they breed from these dogs, making full use of available health screening tests to optimise the chances of the healthiest of puppies as well as the most desirable of temperaments.

In mid-2018, we bought a Labrador from Jeremy Hunt (Fenway Labradors) in Lancashire. We have a shoot, and I wanted to be involved in training our dog. I started to seek out the answer. A trainer who worked through encouragement, not punishment, who was patient and prepared to train me as well as Purdey and whom we both clicked with. I could not have been more fortunate in discovering David. He has brought out the best in both Purdey and me. We have had fun, but within the very well-guided framework of building on Purdey's learning. She is becoming a great gundog. David has total authority over the dogs, but in a firm yet kind manner. He understands all the nuances of their character and behaviour. I would not want to go to anyone else and could not recommend David more highly.
